A Guide to the Outdoors for Mums

A Guide to the Outdoors for Mums

At Amble, we believe the outdoors is for everyone, but we also know that our relationship with it shifts and changes through different seasons of life. Motherhood can be one of the biggest.

Whether you're running on broken sleep, juggling work and kids, or navigating a whole new phase of life, getting outside can feel like a lot. And what "getting outside" looks like can be completely different depending on whether your kids are 1, 10, or 20 years old.

For some mums, the outdoors looks the same as it did before kids. For others, it only began because of them. Either way, it's there for you, for grounding, connection, movement, stillness, fun, and memories. And it doesn't have to be a two-week hiking trip for it to count. Sometimes it's watching the clouds move by, heading out for a picnic in the park, bike riding, day tripping or simply walking to the letterbox and back. All of it counts and none of it makes you any more or less outdoorsy.

If you'd love to spend more time outdoors (with or without your kids) but aren't sure where to begin, we've pulled together some of our favourite communities and resources to get you inspired.

  • Mums Who Hike - A Sunshine Coast community for mums who love getting out on the trails, with kids in tow or without.

  • Hiking with Babies & Kids AU/NZ - A supportive Facebook community for parents in Australia and New Zealand navigating trails with little ones along for the ride.

  • Women Who Hike Australia - The Australian arm of the global Women Who Hike movement, sharing trail inspiration and connecting women who love the outdoors across the country.

  • Mum Walk - A free, mum-led movement running weekly pram walks across Australia, because no mum should walk alone. Find your local group or start your own.

  • Peanut App - A social app designed to help mums find their village and connect with local women at a similar life stage, from pregnancy through to motherhood and beyond.

  • She Treks - A Brisbane-based community getting women outdoors together through group hikes and adventures around South East Queensland.

  • Her Trails - A women's trail running and adventure community with coaching programs, group runs, and retreats for women from first-timers to ultra runners.

  • She Walks - An Auckland-based women's hiking community running guided nature walks across New Zealand and welcoming to all experience levels.

  • Amble Hike Club - Our very own community hikes. Follow along to find out when we're next heading out.

Wherever you're at in your motherhood journey, we hope something here helps you get outside, in whatever way that looks for you right now.
